La Basilica di San Francesco risale alla metà del V secolo d.C. Ben poco rimane della prima chiesa paleocristiana, a causa dei continui rifacimenti che hanno interessato l’edificio nei secoli. Qui nel 1321 si svolsero i funerali di Dante Alighieri.
