Il Nuovo Regio Ducal Teatro alla Scala, semplicemente noto come Teatro alla Scala, colloquialmente chiamato la Scala, è il principale teatro d’opera di Milano. Considerato tra i più prestigiosi teatri al mondo, ospita da 245 anni i principali artisti nel campo internazionale dell’opera, del balletto e della musica classica. L’edificio, progettato da Giuseppe Piermarini e inaugurato nel 1778, sorse sulle ceneri del precedente Teatro Ducale, distrutto da un incendio nel 1776; deve il nome alla chiesa di Santa Maria alla Scala, demolita per far posto al teatro inaugurato il 3 agosto 1778, sotto l’allora regno di Maria Teresa d’Austria, con l’opera L’Europa riconosciuta composta per l’occasione da Antonio Salieri. A partire dall’anno di fondazione è sede dell’omonimo coro, dell’orchestra, del corpo di Ballo, e dal 1982 anche della Filarmonica. Il complesso teatrale è situato nell’omonima piazza, affiancato dal Casino Ricordi, sede del Museo teatrale alla Scala.
